Oh how time flies! I can’t believe that it’s been over a year since I officially announced that we were moving to Ontario, where does the time go? It has been such a hectic, stressful, tearful, sad, happy, busy, joyful, exciting year!
Now I know all of you are wondering “when is this girl going to start designing again?” Well, I’ve begun! There are a couple changes that are happening though that I’m excited to tell you about. I will no longer be posting under Scrapbook Central. As the time has passed over the last year, I have realized that Scrapbook Central represents to me over a decade of wonderful memories created in a beautiful store environment, creating and inspiring all of you, hosting retreats and attending trade shows. It’s time to start fresh! So, with that in mind I am excited to announce that I have created a new blog called Byrd’s Nest Paperie! This blog will be my place to share my creations with you, inspire you with ideas, techniques, feature page kits, and just share what’s happening in my life. My Page Kits and Mini Album kits will be available for purchase through my new Etsy store.
I welcome you to follow me on Facebook personally, as Byrd’s Nest Paperie and South Hill Designs by Charlene Byrd and then my Etsy store and new blog. Here are all the links:

I confess…….I am a scrapbook hoarder! I have begun packing my scrapbook studio and all I can say is WOW! I knew I loved scrapbooking goodies and I had 11 years of owning the store to accumulate stuff but a person just doesn’t realize how much until you start pulling it out of drawers and cabinets and cubbies! I had a really hard time putting stuff in the ‘won’t use’ box but I was able to part with a few things….which means I have stuff for you Tracy and you Cindy to take to school…I’m sure the kids will love it!
So I belong to a small group where we try and inspire each other and motivate each other to do at least one scrapbook project each month. This month’s challenge was a personal goal, perfect as we head into a new year. As I looked in my scrapbook room I realized I needed to get my project done before I moved…I didn’t want to disappoint my fellow crafters! I haven’t packed my adhesive or tools yet and I found 1 stack of paper that didn’t fit in the box and a few embellishments…whew! Thankfully I was able to pull a layout together of what I found….It’s amazing what a person can do with limited supplies!
My goal is simply family! We have a lot of big changes that are going to be happening to us in the coming months and I vow to be there every step of the way to make the transition as easy as possible! (refer to my journaling for the whole story).
My challenge for each of you…..set a goal for yourself! What do you want to accomplish this year? Scrapbook it…..whether it’s a small goal or a really big challenge! It’s all important! I posted earlier “Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365 page book. Write a good one!”(Which reminds me…thanks to Wendy T I now am a faithful user of the app called ‘Collect’. It’s a free app that prompts you to take a picture each day and journal about it. I love it!)
I apologize for not inspiring you as much as I thought I would have over these last couple months. I truly thought I would have so much more free time on my hands but that just wasn’t the case. It’s a true reminder that time speeds by so very fast! Take time to slow down and enjoy life and the ones you love! As I am down to my last couple weeks here before we move I am trying my hardest to spend as much time with the ones who matter the most; having that last coffee date with a friend and spending time with family have become so important. But I will be back…..in Alberta for visits and back inspiring all of you as soon as I get a scrapbook studio again. Thanks to all of you for all the wonderful memories! I am truly going to miss all of you!

Where has the year gone? Time goes by so very fast…..be sure to slow down this holiday season and enjoy the important things in life! It seems like only last week that I announced that we were moving and now it’s happening in less than a month!
Here is an update for you: we take possession of our new house in Ontario on Dec 30th which means that the start of the renos can begin before we get out there. That’s a bonus! We have also just accepted a conditional offer on our house here in Medicine Hat; the last piece of the puzzle has finally fallen into place! Our plan is still to have the boys start school the first week of February which means we need to be on the road a week or so before. The daunting task of packing has begun; I can’t believe how much stuff a family can accumulate in 15 years! It’s a great feeling cleaning and purging though! With life so hectic lately it truly making me appreciate the ones we love so dearly this Christmas season and with time quickly ticking down we are trying to spend as much time with family and friends as we possibly can before we leave.
2014 is going to be a fantastic year; full of creativeness and success with both Scrapbook Central and my new venture with South Hill Design lockets….there just may be a bit of a lull until I get into my new home and fabulous new scrapbook room, so stay tuned and I will keep you updated as we go!
I wish each and every one of you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!
Lots of Hugz!
Remember – Today is next year’s Christmas memory. Make it one that you will always cherish and be sure to enjoy every single moment!

I needed a few thank you cards so I whipped these up in an hour! They are all just a smidge different. I started with a 4×6 piece of white cardstock for my base (folded in half for my card) and then cut 10 pieces of text paper to 2 1/2 x 3. Then I simply cut smaller pieces of coordinating paper, ‘V’ snips here and there and added flowers, lace or butterflies. Super simple and super cute!

Don’t you just love this weather!!! Ok…not really but it’s the perfect excuse to stay inside and scrapbook! So, Wendy Tuchscherer, a friend of mine who designed for the store, did some amazing layouts at the retreat this fall. I used her layout as inspiration and created 3 more layouts using the same design. I love how they all take on their own store!
Here is Wendy’s original layout:
Total scraplift! Just changed a couple pieces to use what I had on hand.
I changed the chipboard out for a stamp and a paper doily.
The same design but totally different.

It’s Scrap Lift Time! That’s right! I’d love to see how you can take one of my pages and make it your own. It’s so much easier to have a starting point when you sit down to create. Create a page and share it with all of us! We’d love to see what you can come up with! Email your pages to my home email firstname.lastname@example.org
I love how quickly this page came together. A few pieces of paper, some lace, chipboard hearts and a chipboard title. Easy Peezy!
The title did’t stand out quite as much as I wanted it to so I added some black pen marks around the letters. I started out wanting them straight but after I messed that up I decided it was easier to just makes them all wonky! lol
These colors scram BOY! And so does the chevron texture and the arrows and the stamping!
I wanted to use texture paste and a stencil to add the chevrons but I didn’t like the white texture paste on white cardstock. So I added ONE drop of Pumice Stone Distress re-inker to the texture paste and mixed it together. It worked perfectly! Now you can make any color of texture paste you want by just adding re-inker!

It’ been a busy few days around the house…my husband is getting ready to go hunting for a week and is taking both boys with him this year. This will be Hunter’s second year and Remington’s first year. They are all so excited…I just don’t get it! lol! And I am trying to finish up a few last minute things (including this post) and then I am off to Ontario tomorrow for a week. I will actually get to see the house we put an offer on (sounds weird that we haven’t seen it…I know, but it’s in the absolute perfect location, needs some renovations and we got it for a great price! So with some TLC we will make it into our cozy home).
So, I promised that I would give you some details on some of the pages I created for the last retreat, so here goes:
The tiny flags were from a diecut sheet. I simply attached them with some foam squares. I then tucked a string along the tops of them and taped the ends on the backside. The I made 4 tiny bows with string and glued them in-between each flag….super cute!
I used a Dusty Attic chipboard frame for this. I simply rubbed Silver Inka Gold with my finger (it’s similar to a creamy eye shadow) to the outside frame. For the inside piece I dry embossed with an embossing folder first, painted it with cream acrylic paint and then rubbed Silver Inka Gold with my fingers on the raised parts.
For the title I did the same technique as the inside frame except this time I added a bit of the Graphite Inka Gold with my finger tip to make it a bit darker.
It’s hard to see in the picture but I added a stork charm with 2 babies!
Inka Gold was one of my demos at the retreat. I applied Graphite Inka Gold with my finger tip to the top of the Pink Pailsee ‘Cherish’ word. It does a nice job of making the word stand out.
Since I seem to be on an Inka Gold kick today…..I’ll share one more with you:
For the birdcage I embossed it with an embossing folder first and then painted it with Crimson Precious Metal Color. This comes in a bottle and is applied with a paint brush. It’s a bit more opaque that the Inka Gold. After the Precious Metal Color dried I rubbed some Graphite and Silver Inka Gold on top. I did the same process to the flower and the title.
I diecut the frame from a Tim Holtz die with 4 layers of black cardstock. Then I glued all 4 layers together leaving the edges un-glued. Use your finger to scrunch the corners. Then add Precious Metal Color with a paint brush to the edges and finished it off with a bit of Silver Inka Gold.
That’s all for today ladies! Hope I’ve inspired you. I’ll post more inspiration once I return from my trip. Have a wonderful long weekend!

So a great group of my customers asked me to join their creative monthly challenge. This month’s challenge was playing cards. The first thing I thought of when they told me the idea was a ‘full house’ and when I thought of a full house there wasn’t a better family than my nephew with his 5 children! I have to say that I really enjoyed creating with any restrictions! Thanks girls for inviting me!
First, I applied a thin coat of gesso over the cards. Then I stamped on them with Vintage Photo Distress ink. The ink did not dry so I added some clear embossing powder and heat embossed them. Lastly I stamped on them with black Staz-on ink. I love how they turned out!
